BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao took oath as MLA from Gajwel in the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday, 1 February.

KCR, as he is popularly known, was recuperating after hip replacement surgery and hence could not take the oath earlier.  It was his maiden public appearance after the surgery on Thursday.

Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar administered the oath in his chamber in the presence of several BRS MLAs, including former ministers KT Rama Rao and T Harish Rao.

After demitting office following BRS’ loss in the Telangana Assembly elections, KCR had driven to his farmhouse in Erravalli on 7 December, the day A Revanth Reddy was sworn in as the chief minister.

On the same night, KCR lost balance and fell, injuring his hip. He underwent hip replacement surgery. After his discharge, he convalesced at his house in Nandagiri Hills in Jubilee Hills.

Most BRS MLAs took oath on 9 December, but KCR could not make it because of the accident.

After the Thursday oath-taking,  KCR said it was the BRS which alone could protect the interests of Telangana state.

The former chief minister, interacting with MLAs who called on him, said that the BRS had stood as a role model for the nation by putting the state firmly on the road to development.

He discussed strategies to be adopted to win the maximum number of seats in the coming Lok Sabha elections as well as the next Assembly session.

BRS upbeat

On Thursday, when KCR arrived at the Assembly, the situation turned poignant, with people watching the leader, who served Telangana twice as its chief minister, take on the role of an Opposition leader.

After he was sworn in, the BRS MLAs greeted him with bouquets. Some leaders touched his feet as a mark of reverence

For the BRS, KCR taking over as the party legislature party leader marked the beginning of its active role as the Opposition. Under working president KT Rama Rao’s leadership, the party had already organised Lok Sabha constituency-wise meetings and is conducting Assembly segment-wise meetings.

Nonetheless, the party cadres have been waiting for KCR to launch a full-throated campaign against the Congress, notwithstanding the daily onslaughts on the grand old party by KTR and Harish Rao.

On several occasions, KTR had warned the Congress that if KCR were the chief minister, the Congress would be better off. Now, with KCR as the Opposition leader, the grand old party should prepare for an all-out attack, the likes of which it had never seen in the past.

Essential presence at party meetings

BRS leaders felt that KCR’s presence at party meetings was essential in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. Currently, the party’s morale is at an all-time low, with some MLAs even paying courtesy visits to Revanth Reddy.

The party also looks forward to KCR leading the charge against the Congress for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The BRS is worried the Congress might field a third candidate in the Raya Sabha elections. That could mean possible efforts to entice BRS MLAs to indulge in cross-voting. Leaders feel only KCR can keep the MLAs on a tight leash.

Later, after reaching his home in Jubilee Hills, KCR directed the party leaders on strategies to be adopted in winning a maximum number of seats in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

The former chief minister, interacting with MLAs who called on him, said that the BRS had stood as a role model for the entire nation by taking the state forward on the road to development.

He also made suggestions to the legislators on the action plan to adopted in the budget session of Assembly which will begin soon.

Those who attended the meeting included KTR, Harish Rao and former Speaker Pocharam Srinvasa Reddy.
