K Keshava Rao

A day after his verbal spat with BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), party secretary-general and Rajya Sabha member K Keshava Rao called on  Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday, 29 March, in a prelude to joining the Congress.

Keshava Rao is understood to have apprised Revanth Reddy why he and his daughter Gadwal Vijaya Laxmi had decided to exit the BRS and join the Congress.

In all likelihood, the father-daughter duo will join the Congress on Saturday or 6 April at a major rally that the Congress is planning at Thukkugda in Hyderabad.

It is expected that the meeting will be attended by party senior leader Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Party delegation meets Kadiyam Srihari, Kavya

In another development, a delegation of Congress leaders led by AICC in-charge for Telangana Deepadas Munsi called on BRS MLA from Station Ghanpur Kadiyam Srihari and his daughter Kadiyam Kavya.

Munsi was accompanied by PCC senior vice-president Mallu Ravi and party leaders SA Sampath Kumar and Rohin Reddy.

Speaking to reporters later, Munsi said they had invited Srihari and his daughter to join the Congress.

Srihari said that he would decide after discussing the proposal with his supporters.

He said he had decided to quit the BRS for various reasons and pointed out that the Congress has not yet decided who should be the candidate for the Warangal Lok Sabha seat.

It is more or less clear that both the leaders would join the Congress soon and after they do, the party might nominate Kavya for Warangal Lok Sabha seat.

In all likelihood, its Central Election Committee (CEC) might announce her name along with others in its list to be released on 31 March.

In a late-night missive to KCR on Thursday, Kavya said she was withdrawing from the contest from Warangal.

Kavya’s plain speak

In her letter to KCR, Kavya said her mind was made up after watching the party become unpopular following reports of its involvement in corruption, land encroachments, phone tapping, and Delhi liquor policy scam cases.

Kavya said that the district leaders did not coordinate at the constituency level. Everyone was acting on their own, pulling the party in different directions, which would damage the party’s image and prospects.

However, she thanked KCR for nominating her for the Warangal SC seat and requested that he and other party leaders forgive her for not contesting.

Kavya sent the letter to KCR after confirming that the party was ready to nominate her for the Warangal seat. Later, she and her father reached Delhi to meet the top brass of Congress.

With BRS leaders leaving one after the other to join the Congress, Srihari appears to have decided that the grand old party is a better bet than the pink party.
