Kavitha's protest at Dharna Chowk

Synopsis: Leading a protest rally against Justice PC Ghose Commission’s notices to KCR, BRS MLC K Kavitha questioned the Telangana government’s failure in stopping Andhra Pradesh from taking 200 TMC of water from Godavari.

Telangana Jagruthi organised a protest rally against the notices issued to former chief minister and BRS President K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) in connection with the alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project.

BRS MLC and KCR’s daughter K Kavitha led the rally against the notices issued by the Justice PC Ghose Commission, probing the alleged irregularities.

However, for the BRS, the protest was more than a legal or political issue: It was a battle for KCR’s legacy. Kavitha has been engaged in a power struggle with the BRS leadership, especially her brother KT Rama Rao.

Dharna Chowk reverberated with slogans and songs as flags fluttered. The songs echoed the pride of Telangana’s statehood struggle and drew a direct line from the dream of a separate state to the leadership of KCR.

“Telangana is KCR,” one verse proclaimed, setting the tone for a rally that fused emotional appeal with political defiance—and set the stage for Kavitha’s scathing attack on the Congress government.

“Why is the Congress government scared?” Kavitha asked. “It’s because they know that they are wrong. They know that we will confront them in the public sphere. That is why they are trying to create obstacles for today’s protest,” she alleged.

“If you don’t let us protest in Hyderabad, we will go to every district and every street and talk about the injustices you are committing,” she cautioned. What was KCR’s mistake?” she asked. “Is it bringing water, money, or development to the state?” she continued.

Explaining that Kaleshwaram was beyond just three barrages, she listed various features of the mega project. “You can make 300 pyramids out of the mud used, 100 Eiffel Towers out of the steel, and 50 Burj Khalifas with the concrete used,” she explained.

“Kaleshwaram, if completed, can irrigate 35 percent of Telangana’s lands, provide drinking water to Hyderabad, and supply water to industries. The project, which lifts an entire river, the world’s largest, came out of KCR’s courage and foresight,” she said. She further taunted the Congress, stating they could never do something similar.

“Today, lakhs of acres in Nirmal, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Medak, Nalgonda, and Khammam receive water from Kaleshwaram. Yet, the Congress does not care about this, they are engrossed in the conspiracy to ensure that KCR gets no credit,” she alleged.

“If we build a house, we face many issues. Such huge projects are the same. Why can’t the Congress make these repairs for the benefit of the farmers?” she asked.

PC Ghose Commission

Kavitha also alleged that the PC Ghose Commission was not working in the government’s interest. She stated that it was politically motivated to defame KCR before the masses.

“In the name of ‘Jalayagnam‘, they did a ‘Dhanayagnam‘, handed over 90 percent of the Kaleshwaram works to Megha Krishna Reddy,” Kavitha stated, referring to former Chief Minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy’s push for irrigation projects.

“The same Megha Krishna Reddy built 20 of the 21 pumphouses. Yet, Revanth Reddy has no guts to call him in front of the Commission. The Congress is not working for the people. It is working for commissions and contractors,” she said.

Kavitha said that it was high time the people started questioning the government. “You need to tell us why you didn’t serve a notice to the contractor before KCR,” she demanded.

“Today, the chief minister’s guru, Chandrababu Naidu, is taking away 200 TMC of Godavari’s water. Why can’t you stop him? Why can’t you call for an Apex Council meeting?” she questioned Revanth Reddy. “I demand that the chief minister stop the Godavari-Penna Linkage, which is taking water away to Andhra Pradesh,” she asserted.

Kavitha also lashed out against the BJP, whom she accused of turning a blind eye to Chandrababu Naidu’s “water robbery”  because they rely on the TDP to support the Central government.

Referring to BJP Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajendar as an elder brother, she asked him to take Telangana’s issues to the Prime Minister.

“When we were fighting for statehood, you said that the BJP leaders are mum, hoping for better positions. Please don’t do the same,” she requested. She asked him to take responsibility for stopping Naidu and making Kaleshwaram a national project.

KCR is set to appear before the commission on 11 June.
