BRS senior MLA G Sayanna passed away while undergoing treatment in a corporate hospital in Secunderabad on Sunday, 19 February. He was 72.

The five-time MLA from the Secunderabad Cantonment segment was suffering from kidney problems for the last few months.

After his blood sugar levels dropped drastically, Sayanna’s family members rushed him to the hospital three days ago, where he died on the afternoon of Sunday, 19 February, while undergoing treatment.

Accompanied by his followers, Sayanna’s family members later shifted the body to his residence at Ashok Nagar in Musheerabad.

On coming to know about his death, a large number of Sayanna’s followers from the Secunderabad Cantonment Assembly constituency and elsewhere in the city rushed to his residence to pay tributes.

Associated with both TDP, BRS

Sayanna, who did BSc, BA, and LLB from Osmania University, was associated with the TDP when legendary actor NT Rama Rao launched the party. He was first elected as an MLA in 1994 on a TDP ticket.

He then won in 1999, 2004 and 2014. However, he lost the elections in 2009 due to a Congress wave. The Congress candidate Dr P Shankar Rao won against Sayanna.

In 2014, he won from the same Assembly constituency on a TDP ticket despite a wave in favour of the TRS — now the BRS — sweeping the Assembly elections after a separate Telangana was carved out.

A year later, Sayanna joined the TRS. He worked as a chairman of the House Committee on Rehabilitation of Street Children, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and House Committee on Child Trafficking, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

He worked as a director of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) half a dozen times in united Andhra Pradesh.

He won accolades from residents of several residential colonies for improving basic amenities like roads, and drainage among other facilities.

Leaders express condolence

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao visited the house of Sayanna and expressed grief over his demise.

He recollected the services rendered by Sayanna to the people as a five-time MLA. Rao also conveyed his deep condolences to the bereaved family members.

In a tweet, Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao said, “My wholehearted condolences to the family and friends of BRS MLA Sri Sayanna MLA Garu on his sudden demise. He was a very humble and polite leader who always toiled for the well-being of people of Secunderabad Cantonment. May his soul rest in peace. [sic]”

Finance Minister T Harish Rao, Labour Minister Ch Malla Reddy, and BRS MLAs conveyed condolence over the demise of Sayanna.

Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president A Revanth Reddy also condoled the death of Sayanna.
