Telangana Assembly election

The Telangana units of the Congress and the BJP found common ground as they slammed the BRS manifesto that party chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao released on Sunday, 15 October.

The manifesto effectively ended the suspense over the new “weapons in the BRS’ armoury” ahead of the 30 November Assembly elections.

It also appeared to have been formulated with the clear intention of stealing the thunder from the Congress’ six guarantees, which the party’s top brass unveiled amidst much fanfare in Hyderabad recently.

‘Copy of Congress promises’

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president A Revanth Reddy termed the ruling BRS party’s manifesto a copy of the promises made to people by the Congress in the past two years.

Revanth Reddy said BRS leaders had, all these days, questioned the Congress on the implementability of the promises made by the party, adding that the manifesto released by KCR proved that the promises could be implemented.

Revanth Reddy said the Congress would treat the BRS manifesto like “waste paper” as it was like a black and white movie and any discussion on it was unnecessary. KCR has come up with new promises without implementing the promises that were given earlier, he said.

The BRS leaders have lost the right and opportunity to question the Congress, which has already announced six guarantees for the people, he said, adding that the expiry date has come from the BRS rule in the state.

He dismissed the BRS allegations that Congress would distribute money to voters in the elections and that money seized from a person in Karnataka was supposed to be sent to him.

Revanth Reddy challenged the chief minister to take an oath along with him at the Telangana Martyrs Memorial in Hyderabad on 17 October that they would fight elections without distributing money and liquor to voters. He said he would reach the memorial to take such an oath.

The TPCC president said his second challenge to the chief minister was to deposit the salaries to government employees and social security pensions to 55 lakh beneficiaries in the State on November 1.

Fulfill earlier promises: BJP

Union Tourism Minister and Telangana BJP state president G Kishan Reddy said the people in the state would not believe the promises made by the KCR in the BRS manifesto.

“He (Chandrashekar Rao) made several promises during elections in 2014 and 2018, and at the time of the GHMC municipal elections. But he failed to fulfil them,” Kishan Reddy said at a press conference at the party’s state office in Nampally.

Kishan Reddy said people were in no mood to listen to the false promises of the chief minister. One can ask anyone in the state about KCR and they would clearly say that he failed to implement the promises made during elections.

“I am ready for any debate on the promises made by the chief minister during his tenure since 2014. What happened to his crucial promises, including unemployment dole to the youth, providing quality education from KG to PG, free distribution of urea, loan waiver, and reopening of Nizam Sugar factory, among other promises,” he asked.

Ridiculing KCR’s statement that the wealth of the state has to be increased further, Kishan Reddy said Telangana’s debts had increased manifold. This, when it was a surplus-budget state before it was separated from erstwhile Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

Out of the total revenue generated in the state, 20 percent was being used to repay debts, he contended.

Telangana’s resources were being exploited and corruption has gone up significantly after the BRS came to power, he alleged, adding that KCR had successfully implemented the best cheating, land sale, liquor and irrigation commission policies, apart from his family corruption, and anti-Dalit policies.

Kishan Reddy said both the BRS and Congress had the history of deceiving people with the false promises made in their manifestoes, and that the people should be cautious of the two parties.
