The Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) on Tuesday, 7 March, announced the candidates for the three vacancies in the Telangana Legislative Council under the MLA quota.
Announcing the names of Desapathy Srinivas, Kurmaiahgari Naveen Kumar, and Challa Venakatrami Reddy, Telangana Chief Minister and BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao asked them to file their nomination papers by Thursday.
He asked Legislative Affairs Minister Vemula Prashant Reddy and BRS general secretary Palla Rajeswar Reddy to make the necessary arrangements.
The chief minister is expected to announce the names of two more candidates — to be nominated to the Council by the Governor — after a state Cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday.
The Election Commission (EC) has already released the schedule for the election to the Legislative Council for the three seats that will be vacated by K Naveen Rao, V Gangadhar Goud, and Alimineti Krishna Reddy on 29 March. They were elected to the council in 2017.
The last date for filing nominations is 13 March, and they will be scrutinised on 14 March. Nominations may be withdrawn till 16 March.
If more than one candidate remains in the fray, the election will be held on 23 March. The counting of votes is expected to begin the same day at 5 pm.
The election process should be completed by 25 March, according to the EC notification.
Earlier, the BRS announced support for the AIMIM candidate in the Legislative Council election from the Hyderabad Local Authorities constituency for the seat which will fall vacant on 1 May.
There will also be an election to the Council from the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahabubnagar Teachers’ constituency, as incumbent Katepalli Janardhan Reddy’s term will end on 29 March.
