Two more, including a 4-year-old boy dies in Hyderabad cylinder 'gas leak' incident, toll reaches six

The number of deaths in the fatal gas leak at Rose Colony in Hyderabad’s Domalguda from earlier in the week went up to six on Sunday, 16 July.

Two more people, including a four-year-old boy, succumbed to their injuries in Gandhi Hospital on Sunday in the horrific tragedy of 11 July.

Four people had already died in the alleged gas leak that led to a cylinder blast.

The four deceased earlier were Padma (55), her daughter Dhanalakshmi, (28) her son Abhinav (7), and her daughter Sharanya (11). They succumbed to her injuries on the night of 13 July.

All seven — including the sole survivor — had gathered at the house for lunch to celebrate Bonalu.

The seventh injured person is still in the Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad and is said to be recovering.

More details emerge

The two who passed away on Sunday were S Nagamani (50) and her grandson Vihan (4).

“Nagamani, who was the sister of Padma, sustained over 25 percent burns. So did Vihan,” Domalguda Station House Officer (SHO) D Srinivasa Reddy told South First.

It was Nagamani’s and her husband S Anand’s house where her sister Padma and her children came from Chilkalguda in Secunderabad.

All seven members were in the house and were about to prepare food around 11:40 am.

As the stove was lit, the fire spread to the gas cylinder, as per the FIR lodged by Anand. Suddenly, huge flames came out from the gas cylinder and spread throughout the room, it added.

The victims couldn’t come out of the room as it was closed from the inside, the FIR said.

“They are saying that it was a gas leak. I don’t know whether it was a gas leak or something else. I was outside when the accident happened,” Anand and Nagamani’s son and Vihan’s father S Madhu told South First.

About his father Anand, who is undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital, Madhu said, “His condition is better now. He is eating and speaking.”

The Domalguda police have registered a case under Fire Accident.

3 fatal fires, 17 dead

At least 17 people have asphyxiated or burnt alive in the major three fire accidents in Secunderabad since September 2022.

An inferno on 16 March at the sprawling Swapnalok Complex in Secunderabad was the third major fire-related tragedy Secunderabad has witnessed in the six months leading up to it.

Earlier, the charred remains of three young men were found in the now-demolished Deccan Corporation building on Minister’s Road. It was gutted in fire on 19 January this year.

Last year, eight people, mostly tourists, were engulfed in flames on 12 September when a massive fire broke out at the Ruby Pride Luxury Hotel, with the fire having started in an electrical vehicle showroom in the building.
