Two BJP chief ministers — Yogi Adityanath from Uttar Pradesh and Himanta Biswa Sarma from Assam — and two Union ministers — Amit Shah and Smriti Irani — will visit Telangana this month to take part in a high-octane Assembly election campaign from 20 October.

To begin with, Union Minister of Women and Children Welfare Smriti Irani will visit Telangana on 20 October, followed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 26 October. While Assam Chief Minister Sarma is expected to arrive on 27 October, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath will arrive on 31 October.

BJP sources said that the itinerary of the leaders was still being worked out in terms of the constituencies they would visit, the likely focus is the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas.

GHMC elections 2.0

The visit of two chief ministers and two Union ministers indicate that the BJP is contemplating following the strategy that was implemented during the GHMC elections in December 2020 that yielded excellent results.

In that election, the BJP surged to second spot with 48 seats, up from just four in the previous election. The TRS (now BRS) saw a shocking slide from 99 seats in 2016 to 56. The AIMIM won 44 seats in both elections.

Adityanath, Shah, and other leaders campaigned during the GHMC elections in 2020.

The meeting, on Wednesday, 18 October, of Union Tourism Minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy and BJP OBC national president K Laxman, with Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan, also suggests that the same strategy adopted during the GHMC polls is being repeated.

In 2020, too, Kishan Reddy and Laxman met Pawan Kalyan a few days before the GHMC elections and sought his support. The same was repeated on Wednesday.

Teach lesson to BRS, Congress: Kishan Reddy

At the state party office in Nampally, Kishan Reddy alleged that the ruling BRS relied only on money to contest in the Assembly elections in Telangana.

Welcoming Palakurthi Zila Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member Kandula Sandhya Rani and other leaders into the party, he said that the BRS leaders were not speaking about the development of the state.

Describing the BRS and Congress as corrupt, dynasty-based parties, Reddy urged the people to teach both a fitting lesson.

Meanwhile, suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh, on Wednesday, dared AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi to declare a candidate for the Goshamahal Assembly constituency.

In order to help the BRS candidate, the AIMIM is not fielding its candidate in Goshamahal constituency, he alleged, recalling that TPCC president Revanth Reddy had asked Owaisi the same question too.

Vijayashanthi vs KCR?

In a post of X (formerly Twitter), film actor-turned-politician and former MP Vijayashanthi said that the activists strongly believe that BJP will not back down in an uncompromising fight against the BRS.

“It is not wrong for the activists to ask Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar from Gajwel and me from Kamareddy to contest against Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao during the Assembly elections,” she said.

“Although contesting the Assembly elections is not my intention, it is a fact that strategic decisions are always party dictated,” she added.
