The BJP central leadership has summoned two key party leaders from Telangana — MLA Eatala Rajender and former MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy — to New Delhi to actively seek the reason behind their staying away from the party programmes.

The call from the high command to the two senior leaders assumed significance in the wake of the rift between them and another group led by state party chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda are likely to hold discussions with Rajender and Rajagopal Reddy.

Putting up a united front

Following reports that the leaders in the Telangana unit of the BJP were lacking unity at a time when the Congress and the BRS were gearing up for the year-end Assembly elections, the high command laid special stress on ensuring unity among the leaders in order to fight against the state government during elections.

Sources said that the two leaders were expected to reach Delhi by Sunday and explain to the high command the party’s situation in the state.

After the drubbing the party received in the recently-held Assembly elections in Karnataka, the BJP seems to be affected morally and the actions of Rajender and Rajagopal Reddy have only added additional fuel to the fire.

Leaders skip party programme

On 22 June, both Rajender and Rajagopal Reddy stayed away from the BJP’s “Intintiki BJP” programme organised by the party across the state to explain the development and welfare programmes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last nine years.

Rajender is maintaining a strategic silence and not actively attending the party’s programmes after a few senior leaders expressed displeasure over him allegedly leaking to the media that he would be made chairman of the BJP Publicity Committee in Telangana.

Rajagopal Reddy, on the other hand, is likely to be staying away from the party’s programmes as his brother and Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy is trying to bring him back to the Congress and is, accordingly, holding consultations with the high command in New Delhi.

During a media interaction late evening on Thursday, Rajender denied rumours that he was staying away from party activities. Stating that he attended the programme, Rajender said that the party was utilising his services on all fronts.
