Telangana Irrigation Minister announced that they would present the Socioeconomic survey to the Cabinet on 4 December
Fulfilling a key election promise made by the Congress during the 2023 Telangana Assembly polls, the state government has successfully conducted what they hail as India’s largest socioeconomic survey—widely referred to as the caste census.
The massive survey, completed in 50 days, covered 96.7 percent of the state’s population, marking a significant step toward data-driven governance.
At a news conference in Hyderabad, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and Health Minister Damodar Raju, highlighted the survey’s role in ensuring equitable development.
The survey recorded details of 3.54 crore people across 1.12 crore households, offering an insight into Telangana’s caste composition. The data will be formally presented in a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 4 February, followed by a discussion in the Legislative Assembly.
“Today marks a revolutionary step for social justice in Telangana,” Minister Reddy said. He noted that the survey aligns with the vision of ‘Future Prime Minister Rahul Gandhi’.
Conducted over 50 days, the survey gathered data on 3.54 crore people out of the state’s 3.7 crore population. Minister Reddy praised officials and volunteers for their efforts. “Completing such a survey in just 50 days is remarkable,” he said.
The collected data will help formulate policies addressing socioeconomic disparities. “The weaker sections can now avail of data-driven benefits and opportunities,” he stated.
“Similar surveys took place in Karnataka and Bihar, however, none match the scale of Telangana’s coverage,” he lauded.
The survey gathered data on 3,54,77,554 people out of the state’s 3.7 crore population. The survey recorded a total of 1,15,71,457 households in Telangana, out of which 1,12,15,134 were surveyed.
According to the survey, Scheduled Castes (SC) in Telangana stand at 61,84,319, making up 17.43 percent of the total population. The Scheduled Tribe (ST) population accounts for 37,05,929, or 10.45 percent. Backward Classes (BC), excluding Muslims, form the largest segment, comprising 1,64,09,979 people (46.25%).
Among the Muslim population, BCs number 35,76,588 (10.08%), while Muslim OCs constitute 8,80,424 (2.48%). The total Muslim population in the state accounts for 12.56% of the total population. Meanwhile, non-Muslim OCs make up 13.31% of the population.
The findings will be presented at a Cabinet meeting at 10:00 am on Tuesday, followed by a discussion in the Legislative Assembly at 11:00 am. Telangana’s data-driven governance sets a benchmark for other states, focusing on social welfare and economic development.
