Synopsis: Telangana has appointed B Shivadhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, effective 1 October, succeeding Dr Jitender IPS following his retirement. A three-decade veteran, currently serving as Director General of Police, Intelligence, Reddy has extensive experience in intelligence, law and order, anti-extremism operations, administrative policing, and urban policing.
The Telangana government has appointed Battula Shivadhar Reddy, a 1994-batch IPS officer, to succeed the outgoing Dr Jitender IPS as Director General of Police (Coordination) and Head of Police Force (HoPF).
In an order issued by the General Administration Department on 26 September, Reddy, currently serving as Director General of Police, Intelligence, was transferred and posted to the top job.
A three-decade veteran of the force with experience in intelligence, law and order, anti-extremism operations, and administrative policing, Reddy will take charge on 1 October, following Dr Jitender’s retirement at the end of September.
Born in Hyderabad and hailing from Tool-e-Kalan (Peddatundla) village in Ibrahimpatnam Mandal of Ranga Reddy district, he pursued his education entirely in the city, completing an LL.B from Osmania University before briefly practising as an advocate.
His entry into public service came after clearing the Civil Services Examination in 1994, following which he joined the IPS in the Andhra Pradesh cadre.
Shivadhar Reddy’s initial assignments as an IPS officer took him to Visakhapatnam district, serving as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli. During this period, he also worked with the Greyhounds force in Adilabad district.
By the time he rose to the rank of Superintendent of Police, he had taken charge of multiple districts, including Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur.
During his tenure as SP of Nalgonda between 2000 and 2002, he worked to neutralise the violent activities of the banned CPI (Maoist). He also handled sensitive assignments in Nellore and Guntur, tackling factional and social conflicts. In 2007, following the Mecca Masjid bomb blasts and subsequent police firing, the government posted him to the sensitive post of Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone), Hyderabad.
After the bifurcation of the state in 2014, he was reassigned to Telangana, where he played a key role in setting up the police intelligence architecture of the newly formed state.
His experience in urban policing also extended to traffic management, having served as DCP (Traffic) and later as Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam, where he launched the “Arrive Alive” road safety campaign and introduced CCTV-based hotel security measures.
On the international stage, he represented India as part of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), contributing to peacekeeping efforts abroad.
Following the bifurcation, he was appointed the state’s first Chief of Intelligence in the rank of Inspector General, shaping its operational framework during a formative phase. Between 2008 and 2012, he headed the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) as Deputy Inspector General. He later served as Additional Director and then Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, before being appointed Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam City.
He was once again sought in 2023, when the government reinstated him as Chief of Intelligence, this time in the rank of Additional DGP. A year later, he was promoted to Director General and continued in the same role.
Among his notable contributions was the planning of the 2016 operation that led to the neutralisation of gangster Nayeem, one of the most high-profile law and order challenges in the state.
Over the course of his service, Shivadhar Reddy has been decorated with several honours, including the Police Medal for Gallantry, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, and the Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak.
