A book cover unveiled by Hyderabad-based Hindutva activist Nagularapu Vara Prasad aka Hamara Prasad has triggered a fresh storm in Telangana.
Prasad, affiliated with Rashtriya Dalita Sena, revealed the final cover of his upcoming Telugu book ‘Kalpitha Nayakudu‘, translated on the jacket itself as ‘The Fabricated Leader‘, last week.
Prasad shared the cover on Facebook, which describes the 730-page volume as an attempt to examine Dr BR Ambedkar’s legacy through the lens of “anti-national” and “anti-Hindu” positions and separatism.
Another post carrying an excerpt from the book states that the author intends to challenge personality cults with “facts” and present “real history” of the country. The book will go on sale from September 18.
This is not Prasad’s first brush with controversy over Ambedkar. He was arrested by Hyderabad police in 2023 after a video surfaced of him saying he would have shot Ambedkar the way Nathuram Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi, over Ambedkar’s ‘Riddles in Hinduism‘.
Reacting to the book announcement, Bharat Rashtra Samiti’s (BRS) RS Praveen Kumar, on Thursday, 27 August, said its release could hurt the sentiments of millions of poor and marginalised people and threaten law and order in the state. He called on the Telangana police to register a case against Prasad and probe any role played by the RSS, and demanded that Prasad be expelled from the state.
Separately, Hyderabad-based advocate and human rights activist B Karthik Navayan has started a Change.org petition urging the RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal to either publicly own the book’s content or disown Prasad. He also requested Telangana police to examine the material for provisions such as defamation and sections relating to promoting enmity between groups.
