A first-year engineering student of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) — popularly known as IIIT-Basara — in Telangana’s Nirmal district allegedly died by suicide on Sunday, 27 November.

The college authorities found the student’s body in a hostel room on the university campus, the police said.

The incident

The 19-year-old student, Ramati Praveen Kumar, hailed from Thudukurthy village in the Nagarkurnool district.

A police sub-inspector attached to the Nirmal police said the student was reportedly upset over his father remarrying a month ago. The student had lost his mother around eight months ago.

“As per preliminary investigation, we believe that he took the extreme step since he was upset with his father marrying another woman a month back,” the officer told South First.

The student had sought the college’s permission to go home and cast his vote in the 30 November Assembly election. “Though he had taken the out-pass issued by the college, he never left for home,” the sub-inspector said.

On Sunday, Praveen went for breakfast. Later, his body was found in a vacant hostel room. Apparently, he had also told his family that he did not wish to continue his studies.

Praveen’s body was shifted to the Bhainsa government area hospital for a post-mortem examination.

RGKUT Vice-Chancellor Venkata Ramana expressed shock over the death and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Fourth death this year

This is the fourth death reported from the RGUKT campus this year, the police officer from the Nirmal police station told South First.

On 8 August, 16-year-old Jadav Babloo from Narayankhed in the Sangareddy district ended his life in his hostel room.

Babloo, who came from an ST community, had joined the university a week before his death. Reports said he had been depressed and homesick ever since he joined the college and wanted to return home.

In June, two first-year PUC female students died on campus within 48 hours.

The first student, Deepika, was found dead in the washroom, while the second student, Likitha, reportedly fell off the fourth floor.
