A delivery executive allegedly jumped off the third floor of a building on Sunday, 21 May, fearing for his life after a dog apparently attacked him at a colony in the Manikonda area of Hyderabad.
The victim, identified as 32-year-old Mohammad Illias, a delivery agent with e-commerce giant Amazon, was injured in the incident.
The incident brought back memories from 11 January this year, when Swiggy delivery executive Mohammed Rizwan (23) fell from the third floor of a building in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills area after being chased by a customer’s dog.
Rizwan succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Meanwhile, Telangana has witnessed several incidents of stray dogs mauling children — at times to death — over the past few months.
As per the Raidurgam police, Illias went to the Panchavati Colony, a residential area of Manikonda, at around 3.30 pm on Sunday.
“On Sunday afternoon, when Illias went to deliver a parcel at the apartment, a labrador came barking and charged him,” said Station House Officer (SHO) M Mahesh of the Raidurgam Police Station.
The door of the apartment was reportedly open during the incident, and the dog was said to be unleashed.
Locals called an ambulance after Illias fell, and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
“He was taken to the hospital and is now out of danger,” the SHO told South First.
However, the Raidurgam police have not registered a case so far, unlike the Rizwan incident, where the owner was booked for negligence.
Speaking to South First, Hyderabad-based Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) president Shaik Salauddin demanded that the dog owner should bear the expenses of the treatment.
“The TGPWU requests dog owners to tie their beloved pets when delivery agents come to deliver items,” said Salauddin, adding that the delivery agents would not know whether the pets were friendly or not, and the same could hold true for the pet, who could be reacting to a stranger.
He also said that Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWA) should discuss the matter in their meetings.
He also demanded that Amazon bear Illias’ “loss of pay” as he was injured during duty hours and would not be able to return to work immediately.
“His livelihood will be affected by this. So, Amazon should pay him at least ₹1,000 per day. Taking this incident and the previous one (Rizwan’s) into account, Amazon should make a policy for such incidents,” he said.
Salauddin also appealed to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to put out a notice that the dog owner will be punished in such incidents.

Rizwan, the earlier victim, lived with his 55-year-old diabetic father, Mohammad Siraj, in a rented house, and looked after him.
“The rest of us (four brothers) live away with our family. He was very attached to our father and used to respect him,” his brother Mohammad Khaja told South First earlier.
About the compensation, he added, “People from Swiggy called us to say that they feel sorry for our loss, but no amount can be given as Rizwan was using my registration ID to make deliveries.”
TGPWU president Salauddin noted back then that Rizwan’s family lived below the poverty line, so Swiggy should have taken note of this and given compensation within a week.
Meanwhile, Rizwan’s family withdrew the case against the dog owner, registered under IPC Section 304 A (causing death by negligence), and agreed to a monetary settlement out of court.
