Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will lay the foundation for the Airport Express Metro Corridor on 9 December.

The 31-km-long project is expected to connect Mindspace junction and Shamshabad Airport. The cost of the project is estimated at ₹6,250 crore.

The route is projected to cut the commute time from the airport to the main city to just 20 minutes.

“Hyderabad is Forging Ahead. Happy to announce that Hon’ble CM KCR Garu will be laying the foundation for Airport Express Metro on 9th December,” Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao tweeted on Sunday afternoon.

The minister also announced that the Airport Express Metro was a Telangana government-funded project and would be completed in three years.

The previous project of the Hyderabad Metro was a public-private partnership with Larson and Turbo (L&T) and was undertaken under the banner Larson & Turbo Hyderabad Metro Limited (LTHMRL).

On Friday, the minister — after inaugurating the new flyover at Shilpa Layout in the city — said the expansion of Hyderabad Metro Rail would happen with or without the Central government’s support.

He said the Phase-II expansion would be completed on the lines of Phase-I, irrespective of the Union government’s cooperation with the state.

The minister blamed the delay in taking up Phase-II works to the pandemic-induced financial dire straits and non-cooperation from the Centre.

He said that the state government had submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and was in discussions with the Central government for the 31-km expansion between BHEL to Lakdikapul (26 km) and Nagole to LB Nagar (5 km).

Two weeks ago, KTR had asked the Central government to give the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase II project in-principle approval as a joint venture between the Central and state governments with outside financial support.

In a letter to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, KTR also sought the inclusion of the proposal in the Central Budget for the financial year 2023–24

The current Hyderabad Metro line is 66.5 km long with 60 stations, with three different lines connected with existing Indian Railways terminals, MMTS, and bus stations along the corridors.

The operation on Red and Blue line started on 29 November, 2017, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2020, the 10-station 10.5-km Green line was started operational on 7 February.
