All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) general secretary and Yakutpura MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri on Wednesday, 24 August, wrote to Telangana Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy seeking the expulsion of MLA T Raja Singh.

This comes after Raja Singh made derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammed on Monday which led to protests from the Muslim community across Hyderabad’s Old City on Tuesday.

Raja Singh was arrested on Tuesday morning but was released on bail by the afternoon.

Following this, protests erupted in the Old City area again. The area has now been put under tight police security, with nearly 50 protesters arrested on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday afternoon, however, the AIMIM MLA sought the expulsion of Raja Singh from the Assembly, stating that Raja Singh has been repeatedly conducting himself in a manner that was unbecoming of a member of the House.

In his letter, the Yakutpura MLA stated that Raja Singh’s statements caused immense hurt to the sentiments of Muslims across India.

“It is a blatant violation of his oath as a member of the Legislative Assembly. The oath binds a member to bear ‘true faith and allegiance to the Constitution’,” the letter read.

Quadri added that Raja Singh repeatedly incited violence and promoted enmity, hatred, and ill-will against Muslims, and thus violated the oath to uphold the integrity of India.

He reminded the Speaker that Raja Singh was earlier this year suspended from the Assembly for misbehaviour, and that his actions on Monday were not a one-off incident.

He urged the Speaker to initiate the expulsion proceedings against Raja Singh under Article 194 of the Constitution.
