First undertaken in Bihar ahead of the state assembly polls, the SIR had sparked widespread protests and opposition.

Synopsis: The ECI has flagged 89.88 lakh elector records in Telangana for verification ahead of the month-long Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls beginning on 25 June. Officials said the flagged entries, which account for 37.67 percent of the electorate, will be examined to address discrepancies in personal, family and documentary details.

The Election Commission of India has marked 89.88 lakh elector records in Telangana, representing 37.67 percent of the state’s 3.38 crore voters, for verification ahead of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls scheduled to begin later this month.

The records were flagged following a pre-verification exercise, which identified inconsistencies in demographic and relational details.

Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) C Sudharshan Reddy clarified that the flagged entries are not deletions and do not automatically affect a person’s voting rights. Instead, they will be examined during the month-long revision exercise beginning on 25 June.

The anomalies range from unusual age relationships within families to inconsistencies in personal details across electoral records.

These include instances where the age difference between parents and children appears implausible, sibling age gaps are unusually narrow, and family relationship details differ from those recorded in previous electoral roll revisions. Records lacking supporting documents or containing incomplete documentation have also been flagged.

Rangareddy district tops list

Data presented by the CEO Sudharshan Reddy showed that 2.38 crore electors, or 70.54 percent of the state’s electorate, have already been successfully linked to historical electoral roll data. However, around 99.64 lakh voters could not be matched with earlier records and will require further scrutiny.

The highest number of flagged records was reported in Rangareddy district, where more than 11.4 lakh electors were identified for verification. Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri followed, with 8.65 lakh and 8.45 lakh records respectively.

Measured as a proportion of the electorate, Medchal-Malkajgiri recorded the highest level of discrepancies, with nearly two-thirds of voter records requiring verification. Rangareddy and Narayanpet also reported high percentages of flagged entries.

The SIR will run from 25 June to 24 July. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will distribute and collect enumeration forms through door-to-door visits, while voters will also have the option of completing the process online.

Election officials said BLOs have been instructed to visit households multiple times to ensure maximum coverage. Public awareness campaigns are also being planned to encourage participation and reduce the likelihood of eligible voters being left out of the rolls.

The ECI has maintained that every eligible elector will be given an opportunity to furnish documents and rectify discrepancies before the final electoral rolls are prepared.
