BRS MLC K Kavitha on Wednesday, 8 February, sought to know from Prime Minister Narendra Modi the status of entities such as State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, and LIC, which had invested heavily in the Adani Group.

She also asked whether the government had any plans to bail them — as well as the people who invested in them — out.

Reacting sharply to the prime minister’s “evasive” reply to the motion of thanks to the President’s address in Parliament, the BRS leader said his speech had no mention of Adani.

The prime minister’s reply was rhetoric and without any substance, she alleged.

Kavitha wondered how Gautam Adani could have become the second-richest person in the world without the support of the Central government in the form of important projects.

The BRS MLC said that Adani’s destiny was entwined with various national projects. If he failed, it would affect the whole country, she noted.

Kavitha said if the prime minister stuck to the “Na khaunga, na khane dunga” line, then he must form a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) or order a probe by an SIT — headed by a sitting Supreme Court judge — to look into the Adani fiasco.

She stated that people from diverse backgrounds had invested in LIC shares. The LIC was India’s company — a company of people — and not a private enterprise, she noted.

“If LIC has invested ₹80,000 crore in the Adani Group, it means people’s money is at stake,” she stated.

If the prime minister wanted to conveniently give an ornate speech to hide behind the national flag to protect his friend Adani, time would decide the fate of this government, Kavitha charged.

“Adani and Pradhani” were intertwined and every single person knew that they were two sides of the same coin, she added.

Painted in ‘white lies’

Referring to the prime minister’s reply, she said that it was repetitive, verbose, and aimed at heckling the Opposition parties.

“The prime minister should realise that it would not help him escape from his responsibilities,” she said.

She described his speech as a bundle of “white lies”, and added that the next election would prove it.

“Speaking white lies in the Parliament is not a healthy trend in democracy. If you believe you can lie and still come back to power, the people will check your arrogance. You must speak the truth now,” she said.

The BRS leader added, “The prime minister is acting like a traffic policeman who is busy diverting criticism towards the Opposition. The BRS is committed to fighting the battle against the BJP government to protect every Indian.”
