Acting on a viral video, Hyderabad police book 3 boys for abusing teen of another religion

Police have identified the minors — all college dropouts — and issued notice to the father of one for allowing son to use his scooter.

The Jubilee Hills Police in Hyderabad have booked three boys for allegedly promoting communal enmity by showering profanities on a teenager belonging to another religious community.

The police served notices to the boys and the father of one of them for allowing his ward to use his two-wheeler.

The minors reportedly harassed the teenager after they found a girl from their community riding pillion with him, The case was registered based on a constable, P Karnakar’s complaint.

The complainant, attached to the tech team of Jubilee Hills Police, said he was on duty when he found two video links on Facebook and X around 2 pm on Monday, 28 August.

The videos purportedly showed the minors, riding a Honda Activa, intercepting the teenager, and verbally abusing him on Jubilee Hills Road No 45.

The complaint

“This video is going viral and may cause disturbance to communal harmony. So I request you to take necessary action on those three unknown male persons on an Activa bike, who caused nuisance and tried to disturb communal harmony,” the first information report read.

Subsequently, a case was registered sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 290 (punishment for public nuisance in cases not otherwise pro­vided for), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language), 505 (2) (offence committed in a place of worship), 506 – (punishment for criminal intimidation), and section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

“The video was made viral on social media platforms. The police registered a case and traced the trio. The three boys are minors and college dropouts, living in Chandrayangutta,” Inspector P Ravindra Prasad told South First,

“While travelling towards Golconda, the boys stopped the duo (teen and the girl) to ask for directions. On learning that the teen was from another community they started abusing him. One of the minors recorded it on his phone and circulated it. The teen and the girl have not been identified. The minors were counselled and their parents were called to the police station,” he said.

The officer added that a charge sheet would be filed after completing the investigation.
