‘Will formulate SoP to avoid mass crowd accidents’: MK Stalin after Karur tragedy

Synopsis: Concluding his statement, the Chief Minister emphasized that every life is priceless and appealed for unity to protect citizens. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure such a devastating incident does not recur anywhere in Tamil Nadu or in India.

Following the Karur stampede, which killed 41 members, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday, 4 October, took to X, to announce that the state government will formulate long-term standard operating procedures (SoPs) to manage large gatherings and avoid future tragedies.

The chief minister called for an inclusive process to design those SOPs, stating that subject-matter experts, political parties, activists, and members of the public across the state will be consulted. He said the resulting guidance will be rigorous and practical, and intended to serve not only Tamil Nadu but as a model for the entire country.

Stalin rejects attempts to politicize

Rejecting attempts to politicize the calamity, Stalin urged all parties to refrain from blaming one another and to work collectively toward durable solutions. He invited suggestions and ideas from everyone, saying the joint effort should focus on preventing further loss of life.

Concluding his statement, the Chief Minister emphasized that every life is priceless and appealed for unity to protect citizens. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure such a devastating incident does not recur anywhere in Tamil Nadu or in India.

MK Stalin also expressed deep sorrow over the Karur tragedy and said the state government is taking the observations and directions of the Madras High Court very seriously. He said the loss has shaken everyone’s hearts and offered his condolences to every family grieving the death of a loved one.

Adding that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up on the orders of the Madras High Court will begin its investigation, Stalin said that he will bring out the whole truth. “Accountability will be ensured at all levels.”
