He further stated that the winning streak of the INDIA alliance continued, after the landslide victory of all the 40 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.

The constituency has 2.37 lakh voters, including 1.16 lakh men and 1.20 lakh women voters.

The voting for the bypoll took place on Wednesday, 10 July, which saw a turnout of 82.48 percent.

Counting of votes began at 8 am and postal ballots were taken up first.

AIADMK boycotts polls

The by-election was necessitated due to the death of DMK legislator N Pugazhenthi in April this year.

The main opposition AIADMK and DMDK boycotted the July 10 bypoll.

On 15 June, the AIADMK announced that it would not contest the bypoll, alleging the ruling DMK would unleash violence and not allow people to vote independently.

Palaniswami, also the Leader of Opposition, alleged that the state ministers and DMK workers, apart from misusing power will also flex their money and muscle power and unleash violence and lawlessness and not allow people to vote independently.

The DMK-led alliance had won all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone Puducherry segment in the just concluded Parliamentary elections.
