Deputy Commissioner of Police V.V. Geethanjali has been relieved from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the POCSO cases involving Gem Granites founder R. Veeramani and others.
According to a report by the Times of India, citing police sources, Geethanjali had requested to be relieved from the SIT, citing personal reasons, and has subsequently proceeded on leave.
The report noted that Geethanjali had been part of the team that investigated the case earlier. The officer had served in the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and was part of the team that handled the POCSO case earlier and came under fire for filing a closure report citing “lack of evidence,” leading to a court-ordered reinvestigation.
According to the report, Geethanjali referred to her involvement in the previous investigation team in a communication to SIT head P. C. Thenmozhi and Chennai city commissioner of police A. Amalraj and requested to be relieved from the current team.
Meanwhile, police sources have reportedly indicated that DCP Geetha, currently serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Kilpauk police district, is likely to replace Geethanjali.
The four-member all-women SIT was constituted on September 24 by Tamil Nadu DGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal. The team, headed by Additional Commissioner of Police P.C. Thenmozhi, also included Joint Commissioner Disha Mittal and Superintendent of Police J. Mutharasi.
The formation of the SIT came on the same day action was taken against three police officers involved in the previous probe of the case, following scrutiny over the handling of the POCSO complaint.
Additional Director-General of Police A Arun was placed under compulsory wait at the office of the DGP/Head of Police Force in Chennai. N Kannan, Inspector-General of Police/Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, was also placed under compulsory wait at the DGP’s office. Arun had earlier served as Chennai Police Commissioner.
Assistant Commissioner MA Yasmin of the Koyambedu Range, Greater Chennai Police, was transferred to the Chief Office Vacancy Reserve on administrative grounds, with immediate effect.
