A four year old male leopard suspected to have killed a four-and-a-half-year-old girl in Valparai was trapped in a cage set up by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department early on Thursday, 26 June morning.
The big cat was captured near the Pachamala Estate South Division, where the child, Roosni — daughter of Manoj Kunda, a plantation worker from Jharkhand — was attacked last Friday.
The leopard had reportedly pounced on the girl while she was playing in front of her house and dragged her into the nearby plantation, triggering panic in the estate area.
The forest department had set up multiple cages in the area following the incident. Officials believe the trapped leopard is the one responsible for the fatal attack.
The animal is expected to be relocated to the inner forest region after veterinary checks.
The incident on last Friday was the second fatal animal attack on a child reported from the Valparai region in the past six months, raising serious concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the plantation belt adjoining forest areas.
