BJP national president JP Nadda, on Thursday, 22 September, launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, while addressing a public gathering in Karakudi. He is on a two-day visit to the state.

Speaking about the DMK’s stance on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the National Education Policy (NEP), Nadda said the opposition to it was a result of “uneducated leaders at the helm of affairs” talking about education.

“I was told that they (the DMK) are opposing the National Education Policy. When I was the (Union) health minister, they were opposing NEET. Actually, when uneducated leaders are at the helm of affairs and they talk about education, this is what happens,” Nadda claimed.

Countering the DMK’s objection to NEET, he claimed that students from rural backgrounds were now able to get a medical education because of it. On NEP, he stated that it allowed students to opt for medical and engineering courses in regional languages.

While Nadda deemed the ruling DMK, “uneducated leaders”, the reality is quite different.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin holds a Bacehlors’ Degree in political science from Presidency College, according to his election affidavit. Health Minister Ma Subramanian is a BA, LLB, while Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi holds a Master’s Degree in History, Political Science, and Public Administration and a PhD, according to their respective affidavits.

The state’s Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan holds a PhD in Philosophy from the State University of New York.

‘Regional parties reduced to dynasty parties’

Another major accusation that Nadda levelled against the DMK was that of dynastic politics.

While accusing all regional parties of getting reduced to “dynasty parties or family parties”, Nadda remarked that the BJP was the only national party with regional aspirations and a strong ideology in the country.

Giving examples of regional parties like the PDP, NC, Shiromani Akali Dal, SP, BJD, TMC, TRS, and the YSRCP — apart from the DMK — to explain his point about dynasty politics, the BJP president said: “Talk about Stalin. The DMK. It is a family party with no regional aspirations… First, there was Karunanidhi, now there is Stalin. The younger Stalin will come next. Everyone else can keep clapping.”

Taking his attack against the DMK a step ahead, he expanded the DMK’s abbreviation as “Dynasty, Money swindling, Katta Panchayat”.

Nadda also accused the DMK of practising “hate politics”.

He asked: “What is the contribution of the DMK? You (DMK) believe in hate politics. You believe in division. You try to divide society. You have got nothing beyond division (to offer). You have no vision. And that is why I say, ideologically, you are a big zero.”

Nadda also spoke extensively about the various development and infrastructure projects undertaken in Tamil Nadu by the Narendra Modi-led Union government.

DMK objects to Nadda remarks

DMK official spokesperson A Saravanan, while responding to Nadda’s remarks, told South First that his party did not want to “stoop to the level of the BJP”.

“JP Nadda says opposition to NEET and NEP is because of uneducated leaders at the helm of affairs in Tamil Nadu. Ask the same question to JP Nadda: Is it because of the qualifications of the so-called leaders helming the affairs at the Union level that they brought in NEP or NEET? What are the qualifications of the leaders in the BJP?” he asked.

On the issue of dynastic politics, Saravanan asked how Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister and former BJP  national president Amit Shah, was made the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“How many centuries has he hit for the country? How many sixes has he hit? Or how many yorkers has he bowled? Is that (not) dynasty politics or nepotism? Will the BJP shut its eye to all this? It’s comical how the BJP preaches about dynastic politics,” he quipped.

Saravanan added that the BJP kept talking about dynastic politics all the time, especially ahead of elections, as it did not have any achievement of its government to talk about.

“Despite all the allegations and attempts made by the BJP, the party will not be able to make inroads into Tamil Nadu,” he said.
