Two killed, seven injured following gang attack in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli

Synopsis: A gang of unidentified assailants carried out a deadly attack in the Tirunelveli district, leaving two people dead and seven others injured. A manhunt has been launched to trace and apprehend the attackers. The brutal assault has triggered tension across the district.

In a gruesome incident near Nanguneri in the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, a gang of unidentified assailants carried out a deadly attack at a tea shop in Perumbathu, leaving two people dead and seven others injured.

According to local sources, around nine members of the gang arrived on motorcycles at Indira Colony in Perumbathu on Monday, 2 March.

They allegedly hurled a petrol bomb at a local tea shop, triggering panic among the public. As people ran for safety, the attackers chased them and indiscriminately hacked several individuals with machetes.

The attack

Nine people sustained severe cut injuries in the attack. Two victims — John Mark (50), a resident of Indira Colony, Perumbathu, and an unidentified migrant brick kiln worker from a northern state — succumbed to their injuries on the spot.

The injured have been identified as Nelson (58), son of Abraham; Prabhakaran, son of Palvannan; Ramasamy, son of Vaikundam; Ganesan (53), son of Arumugam from Veerangulam; and Sasikumar, son of Subramanian from Puliyangulam, among others.

They were rushed to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU).

In a related development, the same gang reportedly entered Kadamboduvalvu village near Kalakkad and attacked residents, injuring two more people.

Following the incident, residents of Perumbathu staged a road blockade condemning the attack. Police rushed to the spot and held talks with the protestors. Heavy security has been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
