Synopsis: More details of the 12 Indians who were killed in the Ras Laffan gas plant explosion in Qatar are emerging.
Two people from Tamil Nadu are reportedly among the 13 killed in the massive explosion at a gas plant in Qatar.
Initial reports identified Babith from Radapuram in Tirunelveli district and Sujith Kumar from Panagudi as victims of the incident.
However, Tirunelveli District Collector Dr R Sukumar has so far confirmed only Babith’s death, while official confirmation regarding Sujith Kumar is still awaited.
The explosion at Qatar’s major LNG processing facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City killed at least 13 people and injured 66 others.
The Embassy of India in Qatar said 12 of those killed were Indian nationals.
Qatar’s Interior Ministry said the blast was caused by a “technical accident” on Sunday night, with the impact reportedly turning the sky over the industrial city orange.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had tweeted that he was “deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City.
“As further details emerge, our Embassy continues to be in touch with Qatari authorities, and is reaching out to render assistance to the families of Indian nationals affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” he went on to add.
