Synopsis: Sankgeetha Sornalingam, the wife of actor-turned-politician Vijay, has filed for divorce in a court in Chengalpattu, accusing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief of having an extramarital affair with a female actor. The plea seeks dissolution of their 26-year marriage, residence rights and permanent alimony.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s wife, Sankgeetha Sornalingam, has filed for divorce in a family court in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, accusing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief of having an extramarital affair with a female actor.

Sankgeetha is a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the UK and holds UK citizenship. She married Vijay in the UK on 7 July 1998 and held a ceremonial wedding in Chennai a month later. The couple have two children, aged 25 and 20.

Seeking to end their 26-year marriage, the petition said that despite Vijay’s initial assurances that he would end his relationship with the female actor, it continued, causing Sankgeetha “deep emotional pain and mental suffering”. It also alleged that financial restrictions were imposed on her and her movement was curtailed.

“The marriage has broken down irretrievably and is incapable of revival. The petitioner cannot continue in a relationship that has become a constant source of mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering,” the petition states.

The plea was filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b) and (d), and Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Along with dissolution of marriage, she has sought residence rights, permanent alimony and other relief.

The petition said it does not name the female actor at this stage to avoid unnecessary publicity, but reserves the right to implead her during the proceedings if required.

It alleged that Vijay continued to publicly associate with the actor, including travelling abroad and attending public events with her.

Social media posts about these appearances, including posts by the actor, caused repeated humiliation to Sankgeetha and their children, the petition said.
