Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s wife Sankgeetha has filed for divorce, accusing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader of having an extramarital affair with a female actor.

While seeking to end their 26 years of marriage, Sankgeetha said that despite initial assurances, the politician’s relationship continued, causing her “deep emotional pain and mental suffering.”

The couple has two children, aged 25 and 20.

The petition further alleged that the actor continued to publicly associate with the actress, including travelling abroad and attending public events together. It also claimed that social media posts, including those posted by the female actor, related to these appearances caused repeated humiliation to Sankgeetha and their children.

Additionally, she alleged that financial restrictions were imposed on her, and her free movement was curtailed.

“The marriage has broken down, irretrievably and is incapable of revival. The petitioner cannot continue in a relationship that has become a constant source of mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering,” the petition said.

Notably, the petition stated that Sankgeetha refrained from naming the female actor at this stage to avoid unnecessary publicity, while reserving the right to implead her, if required during the proceedings.

The divorce plea has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 & 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Along with dissolution of marriage, Sankgeetha has sought residence rights, permanent alimony, and other reliefs.

The petition said Vijay and Sankgeetha, a UK citizen, got married in the UK on 7 July 1998, and a ceremonial marriage was held in Chennai a month later.
