Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) held its first public meeting on Friday, 28 March, in Thiruvanmiyur in the South Chennai region of Tamil Nadu to outline the party’s future plans and organisational strategies.
Along with Vijay, the meeting was attended by several key leaders of the party, including its Secretary (Membership) Vijayalakshmi, Secretary (Headquarters) Rajasekar, General Secretary (Election) Aadhav Arjuna General Secretary N Anand, Treasurer Venkataraman, Deputy Secretary CT Nirmal Kumar and Joint Secretary Tahira.
The TVK passed several key resolutions during its general council meeting on Friday, which were read by Selvi CG, a member of the district executive committee from Kanyakumari West, during the public meeting.
During the general council meeting, the TVK stressed the importance of following the path of its ideological leaders and granted full authority to Vijay for all party-related decisions.
Arjuna said that Vijay, who has been referred to as “Thalapathy” (commander) until now, would be addressed as “Vetri Thalaimagan” (Victory Leader).
The general council meeting of the party emphasised the need for autonomy for state governments.
It also passed a resolution calling for action against the alleged corruption in the TASMAC liquor distribution system. TVK raised concerns over law and order issues and women’s safety, urging the establishment of special fast-track courts and a dedicated department for women’s and children’s safety.
The party addressed the proposed delimitation based on the 2026 Census and insisted on retaining the current 543 seats. It highlighted the importance of a balanced bilingual policy and rejected the three-language policy mandated by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. TVK also reiterated its firm opposition to the construction of an airport in the Parandur region.
Another resolution was passed during the meeting demanding a public referendum on the political future of Sri Lankan Tamils. It demanded a permanent solution for the fishermen issue, similar to Gujarat’s model, for Tamil fishermen.
TVK extended support to the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and the Government Employees Organisation (JACTO-GEO) protest and demands, including the implementation of the old pension scheme.
The part also called for a caste survey and necessary inspections.
The party has also begun its preparations for the upcoming elections with a strong infrastructure in place. Party leaders vowed to throw out “corrupt ministers and dynastic politicians”.
Meanwhile, reacting to DMK’s criticism that Vijay was engaged in “work-from-home politics”, Arjuna said, “This is not work-from-home politics. You were working from home only because MGR rejected you during his rule. The entire DMK cabinet should prepare for retirement. This is the politics that will send you home. We are becoming increasingly clear that our main opponents are both the DMK and BJP.”
“The DMK is spreading false propaganda about Prashant Kishor’s visit. They use election strategy firms to break Opposition parties and devise various tactics. If one uses political power for personal gain, that is corruption,” he added.
Arjuna further alleged that BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai was working for the DMK.
“Annamalai is working for the DMK. He should be loyal to Modi, but the DMK has set him up. When a tiger stays silent, a goat talks nonsense. Modi in Delhi and Annamalai in Tamil Nadu are diverting political narratives in various ways. When protests for women’s rights take place, they attempt to divert attention using force,” he said.
“If you target our party or our leader, we will expose your true face. The youth will make a new decision in 2026. When Anna founded AIADMK, only youth formed the party. TVK does not believe in caste; it is the DMK that uses caste for politics. The only leader who will fulfill Anna’s vision is Vijay,” said Aadhav Arjuna,” he added.
Arjuna also criticised the state government for attempting to cover up the sexual assault case at Anna University in Chennai.
