Synopsis: The AMMK seems to be warming up to the idea of joining hands with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ahead of the Assembly elections in 2026. However, the party’s chief, TTV Dhinakaran, might consider rejoining the NDA if Edappadi K Palaniswami isn’t the NDA’s chief ministerial candidate.
Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) general secretary TTV Dhinakaran said that a new alliance in Tamil Nadu under actor Vijay’s leadership is “certain,” though he remained non-committal about whether his party would join it.
Speaking to reporters at Ariyalur after attending a party office-bearers’ function on Monday, 15 September, Dhinakaran said the AMMK would not align with the BJP.
“How can we be in an alliance where Edappadi K. Palaniswami is projected as the chief ministerial candidate? Our demand is that Palaniswami should not be the chief ministerial face. You can understand the rest,” he responded to a specific query.
Dhinakaran predicted a quadrangular contest in the Assembly elections.
“I have already said many times that an alliance will emerge under Vijay’s leadership. Likewise, there will be an alliance under Seeman’s leadership too. So, Tamil Nadu will surely witness a four-cornered contest in the upcoming elections.”
BJP’s former state president K Annamalai had on 4 September requested Dhinakaran and O Panneerselvan to return to the NDA fold.
Two days later, Dhinakaran said he would reconsider his decision to sever ties with the BJP if the “obstacles” were removed. He added that Annamalai had handled the NDA affairs better than the current BJP state chief, Nainar Nagendran.
Dhinakaran had then said that the next government would be formed by the alliance that includes the AMMK.
“The alliance we join will definitely form the government. Our first choice is NDA, but the AIADMK must make a good decision. There will be no alliance with DMK or with Seeman. In politics, anything can happen. A new alliance will emerge,” he said.
He further added that Vijay should not be belittled. “What’s wrong with going with Vijay? Shouldn’t he be allowed to take leadership? Vijay should not be belittled,” Dhinakaran said.
Three days ago, Dhinakaran said at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram that he had not decided on having an alliance with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. He, however, added that Vijay’s popularity as a leading actor would create an emotional impact on the people, like what Vijayakanth had achieved.
On actor Vijay’s recent public outreach events, Dhinakaran said on Monday he had watched the campaign on television.
“I saw many young people, especially youth, young women, and those under the age of 40 gathering in large numbers,” he noted.
