Synopsis: Thousands of Tamil Nadu police aspirants say years of irregular SI recruitment have left them in uncertainty. With the COVID-era age relaxation set to expire, many now fear they may lose their final chance to join the force.
M. Dinesh Kumar, a 30-year-old from southern Tamil Nadu, has long dreamt of joining the police force.
However, he now finds himself caught between two developments.
On one hand, the two-year upper age limit relaxation granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic is set to expire in September 2026. On the other, the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) has announced that the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment examination, which was expected to be held this year, will instead be conducted next year.
As a result, Dinesh and lakhs of other aspirants, who have spent months and even years preparing for the examination, say they have been left disappointed and uncertain about their future.

The Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board is responsible for recruiting personnel for the state’s Police, Fire and Rescue Services, and Prisons and Correctional Services Departments through competitive examinations.
As part of its mandate, the board also conducts recruitment for Sub-Inspector posts in various wings of the Tamil Nadu Police.
In 2023, the then Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, Dr C Sylendra Babu, IPS, sent a memorandum to the then Chairperson of the TNUSRB outlining a proposed annual recruitment schedule for SI posts.
According to the memorandum, the SI recruitment notification was to be issued by May 15 every year, applications were to be received by June 15, scrutiny of applications completed by July 30, and the written examination conducted on August 10. It further proposed that the written examination results should be declared by August 20.
The memorandum also laid down a timeline for completing the remaining stages of recruitment. It envisaged the final selection list being prepared by December 5, approval from the Director General of Police being obtained by January 31, and selected candidates being sent for training from April 1.
However, aspirants who spoke to us said that this schedule has never been followed in any year. They attribute the repeated delays to recurring irregularities in the recruitment process and the court cases that have followed.
The most recent SI recruitment examination was held in December 2025. Although the results were expected within a month, they have still not been announced even after eight months.
For the first time, TNUSRB released an annual planner in January 2026. As per that planner, the Joint Recruitment examination, which includes SI recruitment, was scheduled for November 2026.
However, following the change in government, the newly released annual planner now states that the examination will be conducted only in August 2027, effectively postponing the recruitment by another year.

In 2021, the Tamil Nadu government granted a two-year upper age limit relaxation for candidates appearing in government recruitment examinations, citing disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The relaxation was made applicable from 13 September, 2021, to September 12, 2026.
Aspirants argue that because SI recruitment has not been conducted regularly over the past five years, many candidates have been unable to benefit from this relaxation.
With the concession set to expire this September, thousands who were relying on it fear they will become ineligible to appear for future SI recruitment.
Dinesh is one among them.
“The status of the previous recruitment itself has not inspired confidence. Now, this year’s recruitment has been postponed altogether. It has created uncertainty for lakhs of aspirants like me,” he said.
Twenty-four-year-old P. Balaji, who is preparing for several competitive examinations including the SI recruitment, expressed similar frustration.
“I don’t even know why these examinations are being announced anymore. It feels as though they are being conducted only for namesake. There is no certainty in the notification process, and now they say there won’t even be an examination this year. We have completely lost confidence in the system,” he said.
Aspirants are now demanding a two-year extension of the existing upper age limit relaxation, annual and time-bound SI recruitment notifications, and a transparent recruitment process with a clearly published syllabus and examinations conducted regularly without delays or irregularities.
