Synopsis: Speaker JCD Prabhakar said disciplinary proceedings against 21 AIADMK MLAs have been dropped after the party pardoned their act of violating the whip during the government’s trust motion in the Assembly. However, a probe has been initiated against four other MLAs.
Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar has dropped disqualification proceedings initiated against 21 AIADMK MLAs after the party pardoned them for violating the whip.
However, an inquiry has been launched against four other legislators, Isakki Subbaiah, Maragatham Kumaravel, V Sathyabama, and D Jayakumar, Prabhakar told reporters on Tuesday, 9 June.
The AIADMK sought disciplinary action against the MLAs after they had violated the party whip during the TVK government’s trust motion on 13 May.
The Speaker said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami had submitted a petition seeking the disqualification of 25 AIADMK MLAs for allegedly voting against the party whip.
However, the Speaker said his office later received four letters from Palaniswami, stating that 21 of the 25 MLAs had been pardoned after they had expressed regret for their actions.
Accepting the request made by the AIADMK general secretary, the Speaker said the proposed disqualification action against those 21 MLAs under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution has been dropped, and all further proceedings against them have been closed.
At the same time, he said inquiry and further action against the remaining four MLAs, Subbaiah, Sathyabama, Kumaravel and Jayakumar, have commenced. A final decision will be announced after completing the proceedings.
The Speaker also clarified that the votes cast by the 25 AIADMK MLAs in support of the government during the confidence motion would remain valid.
Responding to a question on whether the Governor’s address in the Assembly would begin with the Tamil Thai Vaazhthu, Prabhakar said, “Wait and watch.”
On the issue of live telecast of Assembly proceedings, he said a decision would be announced soon.
To another question on whether AIADMK factions had reunited, the Speaker said he had not received any letter from the party.
Asked whether the Governor would read out the entire Assembly address, the Speaker remarked, “Like you, I am also waiting for the 18 June address.”
