With eyes set on the 2026 Assembly elections, DMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has asked his ministers and the party’s district secretaries to get cracking.
At a Cabinet meeting on 13 August, Stalin asked the ministers to properly attend to their work. “I am keeping an eye on your work,” he told them.
The tone was no different when Stalin met DMK’s district secretaries at Anna Arivalayam, the party’s headquarters, in Chennai.
“Our goal is to win 200 constituencies in the 2026 Assembly elections and we should work towards achieving the goal,” he told them on 16 August. “Everyone should strive to convert the welfare schemes into votes. Booth-level committees should be strengthened.”
Stalin is set to leave for the US on 27 August to attract investments to the state. He is expected back on 12 September.
He urged the secretaries to hold general membership meetings and report to the party by 15 September.
“Even if I go to America, I will keep an eye on the party and the government,” he warned. “Everyone should work towards taking our party to the next generation,” Stalin said.
Saying that complaints have been received against some district secretaries and administrators, he said they would be investigated. “Promotions will be based on your work. Action would be initiated against those at fault,” he added.
The district secretaries are the ones who embrace the administrators. Action will be taken against whoever is at fault. District secretaries should take immediate action against erring councillors, including ousting them from office,” he said.
The party meeting did not discuss the Cabinet reshuffle or about increasing the number of district secretaries. However, his talk on changing non-performing district secretaries has instilled fear in many leaders.
