Synopsis: In Rajya Sabha MDMK leader Vaiko expressed Tamil Nadu’s opposition against the NEP 2020 and slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over not visiting Manipur.
Highlighting the Tamil Nadu government’s opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko said it should be thrown in a dustbin.
He made the remarks during the legislative business of the Rajya Sabha on Monday, 17 March.
“The new education policy should be thrown in a dustbin. Our Dravidian model government led by Stalin has already opposed the policy and we will continue opposing it. We are organising a conference in this regard, said Vaiko.
He also quoted a Tamil poem opposing the Hindi imposition.
Our life and our wealth,
Let the conch proclaim—Tamil shall never fade!
Our foes have vanished into the distance,
Here, the Tamils stand united as one!
Further, he slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur despite the ongoing violence in the state, for over a year.
“Serious discussion is going on about Manipur and what is happening there. Rape, murder, arson and everything else have been going on there. Hundreds of people have given their lives,” Vaiko said and asked why the prime minister “the custodian of 140 crore people” had not visited the violence-torn state.
He claimed that the prime minister failed in his duty since he had visited several foreign nations while ignoring the visit to Manipur.
However, Deputy Chairman Harivansh said his question will not go on record since a member cannot question the prime minister’s foreign visits.
Vaiko termed the prime minister a “picnic minister” touring all countries.
Replying to Vaiko, Union Minister JP Nadda claimed that the remarks that he made against the prime minister were unparliamentary and crossed all levels of decency.
He asked Harivansh to remove Vaiko’s speech from the record.
