Officials reported that several workers were engaged in making firecrackers inside a residential building located in the Vijayakarishalkulam area when a sudden blast occurred.

The initial explosion triggered a rapid fire, causing the half-finished fireworks stored onsite to ignite and explode in a chain reaction. The force of the blast severely damaged the structure, reducing parts of the building to rubble.

The incident once again drew attention to the persistent safety challenges faced by firecracker manufacturing units in the region.

The Virudhunagar district, especially the Sivakasi–Sattur belt, is widely recognized as India’s primary hub for firecracker production. However, the area has witnessed numerous accidents over the years, often attributed to improper storage of explosives, excessive stockpiling, and unauthorized manufacturing activities within residential premises.

Saturday’s blast marks the fourth deadly explosion related to firecracker production in Virudhunagar district over the last month.

These incidents have collectively claimed 16 lives, prompting concern among safety regulators and calls for more rigorous enforcement of the Explosives Act.

In July, three separate blasts were reported across the district, linked either to licensed factories violating safety regulations or illegal units operating without authorization.

These tragedies predominantly affected daily wage workers, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.

Following the latest explosion, senior police officials have initiated a thorough investigation. Early findings indicate that the handling of explosives lacked proper safety precautions.

Authorities from the Revenue and Fire Safety Departments have been engaged to assess the extent of damage and to determine the precise cause of the blast.
