Synopsis: More details of the 12 Indians who were killed in the Ras Laffan gas plant explosion in Qatar are emerging.
Three people from Tamil Nadu are among the 13 killed in the massive explosion at a gas plant in Qatar.
The deceased have been identified as Babith (26) from Chidambarapuram Yakobpuram in Tirunelveli district, Sajith Kumar (25) from Sivakamipuram in Panagudi, and Suvin (24) from Azhagiyanambiapuram.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay expressed deep grief over the tragedy and said efforts are underway through India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Qatar to bring back the bodies to Tamil Nadu at the earliest.
The Chief Minister also directed the Overseas Tamils Welfare Minister K Thennarasu to expedite the process.
The CM announced that a compensation of ₹10 lakh will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund to each of the bereaved families.
The Tamil Nadu government has also launched helpline numbers for families seeking information related to the accident.
The explosion at Qatar’s major LNG processing facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City killed at least 13 people and injured 66 others.
The Embassy of India in Qatar said 12 of those killed were Indian nationals.
Qatar’s Interior Ministry said the blast was caused by a “technical accident” on Sunday night, with the impact reportedly turning the sky over the industrial city orange.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had tweeted that he was “deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City.
“As further details emerge, our Embassy continues to be in touch with Qatari authorities, and is reaching out to render assistance to the families of Indian nationals affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” he went on to add.
