Synopsis: The scheme has been approved as part of the government’s Vetri Thamizhagam Vision Document. According to the order, the gold ring will be given to newborns born in government hospitals and belonging to eligible families in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government, on Tuesday, 23 June, has issued an order to implement the “Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam”, under which one-gram gold rings will be provided to children born in government hospitals to families permanently residing in the state.

The scheme has been approved as part of the government’s Vetri Thamizhagam Vision Document.

The government said the scheme is based on the Tamil cultural practice of “Thaai Maaman Seer”, in which a maternal uncle presents gifts to welcome a newborn child. Under the scheme, the state will provide the gold ring as a symbolic gesture linked to that tradition.

The government further said it has been implementing several maternal and child welfare programmes, including financial assistance for pregnant women, free delivery services, newborn care, nutrition support, emergency obstetric treatment and the PICME monitoring system.

The government has allocated ₹755.83 crore annually for implementing the scheme.

Children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026 will be eligible for the scheme, which is scheduled to be formally launched on September 15, 2026.
