Synopsis: Heavy rain in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu caused damage to houses and a government-run Anganwadi centre in Pernambut town, while flooding also affected crops in neighbouring Ranipet.
Heavy rain in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, 23 August, caused damage to houses and a government-run Anganwadi centre in Pernambut town, while flooding also affected crops in neighbouring Ranipet.
Two old houses, belonging to Mohammed Basha (55) and Mohammed Naushid (45), partially collapsed after their walls weakened and cracked in the downpour. Both families, who had been staying inside, have since been asked to move to safer places.
“The houses are no longer safe and will be pulled down. A survey of other weak structures in the town has also been taken up,” said NT Velavan, Commissioner-in-Charge, Pernambut Municipality.
In another incident, a wall of a rented Anganwadi in Salaipet caved in. The centre, which has about 30 children, had been shifted to the rented building earlier this year after its original premises became unsafe. Children have now been moved to a temporary space.
Parents have urged officials to construct a permanent building for the centre. Vellore district has over 1,000 Anganwadi centres, including about 70 under construction. Several low-lying areas in Vellore, including Sampath Nagar and Kansalpet, reported waterlogging.
Power cuts were frequent across the district due to strong winds. In Ranipet, sugarcane and paddy fields were submerged, resulting in crop loss.
As of 8.30 am on Saturday, Vellore district had recorded 696.30 mm of rainfall. Pernambut, Gudiyatham, Katpadi, Bagayam, Sathuvachari and parts of Vellore town received heavy showers, while towns in Tiruvannamalai district, including Arani and Jamunamarathur, also saw significant rain.
Arcot, Walajah, Arakkonam and Sholinghur received only light showers. Tirupattur and nearby areas faced strong winds with mild rain.
