Three children died due to suspected food poisoning at the Vivekananda Sevalayam, a private orphanage, in the Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, 6 October.

Eleven other children have been admitted to the government hospital for treatment, out of whom three are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The children reportedly fell ill after consuming food on Wednesday night. They had rasam rice. A few hours later, 14 children began to vomit and some of them fainted.

Tiruppur District Collector T Vineeth told South First: “Two of the students died in the morning [on Thursday] and one died on the way to the hospital. Eleven of the students are admitted to the hospital, and three of them are in the ICU.”

He added: “We suspect food poisoning, but the exact reason for the children’s death will be ascertained after clinical investigation of samples.”

The collector also said that the orphanage was a recognised children’s home, and the authorities were trying to find out the exact reason behind the tragic incident.

“The kitchen of the childcare home has been sealed, and food authorities are conducting a detailed inquiry into the matter,” said Vineeth.

The food samples have been sent for testing. The police are also investigating the Vivekananda Sevalayam administration in the case.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) took cognisance of the incident and asked the Tamil Nadu chief secretary to submit an Action Taken Report within 48 hours.
