Several districts in Tamil Nadu have declared a school holiday on Monday, 8 January, due to heavy rains, including in Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, and Karaikal.
Some districts, including Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam, have declared a holiday for both schools and colleges.
Light to moderate rain with occasional intense spells, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are likely to continue over the coastal and southern districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry, on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
On Sunday, the IMD said that light to moderate rainfall was likely over south peninsular India, with isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu in the next four days, and over Kerala for the next two days.
Overnight rains lashed parts of Puducherry, while in Tamil Nadu, it is the Cauvery Delta region that received heavy rains. The delta region includes Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur.
Providing an 8 am update on X, independent Tamil Nadu weather channel Chennai Rains said that a band of heavy rains is pushing in towards coastal Tamil Nadu between Nagapattinam and Puducherry. Similarly, a band of moderate to heavy rain can be seen happening around the southern parts of Chennai and its suburbs, which may move to the rest of the city.
The post added that Cuddalore and Viluppuram districts, along with parts of Chengalpattu may continue to receive heavy rains.

As per data recorded between 8.30 am on 7 January to 2.30 am on 8 January, the IMD noted that Nagapattinam received 158 mm of rainfall, the highest among the areas that have received rainfall since Sunday. This is followed by Ennore port (90 mm), Puducherry (84 mm), Karaikal (84 mm), and Cuddalore (82 mm).

The flow of water to Chembarambakkam lake increased from 36 cubic feet on Sunday to 497 cubic feet on Monday. In Chembarambakkam, which has a capacity of 3,645 million cubic feet, the current water reserve is 3,132 million cubic feet, as on Monday morning. About 108 cubic feet of water is being released from the lake for drinking water.
Normal life was affected in Puducherry on Monday with incessant rain pounding the Union Territory in the last 24 hours and a holiday was declared for schools and colleges.
Meanwhile, fishermen did not put out to sea owing to the heavy rainfall caused due to a trough of easterlies in the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Low-lying areas remained waterlogged. Standing crop was affected in several parts of the Union Territory, sources said.
All Puducherry University exams scheduled to be held on Monday have been postponed due to continuous rain. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai University in Chidambaram announced that exams would be postponed due to heavy rains.
