Realised rainfall (mm) in the past 24 hours (up to 8:30 IST on 9 November) (RMC/X)

The Northeast Monsoon is in full effect in Tamil Nadu, as the southern districts of the state recorded heavy showers on Thursday, 9 November. Chennai can expect slight showers in the late evening due to fresh bands being formed over the Bay of Bengal, stated weather experts.

Following the heavy downpour, the administration in several districts, including four taluks in the Nilgiris district, and Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore districts, declared holiday for schools.

Except for northern Tamil Nadu, the monsoon is active throughout the state. The intensity of rainfall will subside in two days, K Srikanth, a weather blogger, told South First.

What the Met Department predicted

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall all over the state.

Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the southeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea, a low pressure area was formed over east central Arabian Sea at 5.30 pm on 8 November.

It is likely to move nearly westwards and become less marked over the same region during the next 24 hours, the RMC said in a release.

According to the RMC, moderate thunderstorms occurred over Tenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Thiruvallur districts.

The rainfall data

As per the data from the RMC, Tamil Nadu has received 187 mm rainfall so far in November  (till 8 November). Tenkasi and Tirunelveli stations topped with rainfall of 330 mm and 313 mm, respectively.

Districts including Ariyalur, Ranipet, Tirupathur, and Krishnagiri received less than 100 mm rainfall each, and still are waiting to experience the intensity of the monsoon.

Owing to continuous rains, landslides were reported at about five places on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line, leading to the cancellation of the mountain train service.

A landslide occurred at Kotagiri, too, affecting the road traffic and, as a result, traffic was diverted via Coonoor to Mettupalayam.
