The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) on Sunday, 8 February, cancelled the Group II and Group II-A Main examination across the state following protests over mismanagement at exam centres.
Candidates complained about last-minute changes in exam venues, missing roll numbers, and non-availability of question papers.
Confusion was reported at different centres including Presidency College in Thiruvallikeni, DG Vaishnav College in Arumbakkam, and Government Arts College for Men in Nandanam.
Protests and road blockades were staged by candidates due to poor communication and delays.
Around 9,223 candidates were expected to appear in the morning session and 9,244 in the afternoon session across 47 centres. In Chennai alone, 3,221 candidates were allotted seven centres.
The examination was conducted to fill 828 vacancies in Group II and Group II-A services. TNPSC Chairman S.K. Prabakar announced the cancellation and said that a new date for the examination will be announced soon.
Officials said about 600 candidates were wrongly allocated exam centres because of a software error. Around 1,000 candidates turned up for the exam at a college that had arrangements for only 300 candidates.
More than 9,000 candidates were scheduled to appear for the mains exam, which is being held for 1,000 vacancies in assistant, revenue inspector, and other posts.
“The revised exam dates will be announced in two weeks. Due to this error, the Group II Tamil eligibility test scheduled for the afternoon has also been postponed,” said TNPSC Controller of Examinations A Shanmuga Sundaram, reported Times of India.
