Tamil Nadu polls: Stalin, Vijay file nomination papers on day 1

Vijay had earlier said that the elections would be a direct battle between the people and the Stalin-led DMK.

Synopsis: While Stalin is seeking a fourth consecutive win from Kolathur, Vijay is making his debut in electoral politics from Perambur.

Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin, and TVK chief Vijay were among the candidates who filed their nomination papers on Monday, 30 March.

Monday was the first day of filing nominations for the 23 April Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

Stalin, who filed his nominations from the Kolathur constituency in Chennai, expressed confidence that he would return to power for a fourth consecutive time.

The DMK later took out a roadshow and sought the support of the voters. He also released a book highlighting the contributions he had made to the constituency. Stalin has been representing Kolathur since 2016.

Vijay debuts

Vijay, who filed his papers from Perambur in Chennai, is pinning his hopes on the constituency’s large working-class population. While announcing the TVK’s list of candidates on Sunday, actor-turned-politician Vijay had said that he would contest from Tiruchirappalli East also, besides Perambur.

A huge crowd had gathered in Vyasarpadi much before Vijay arrived to file his nomination papers. He was accompanied by TVK general secretary N Anand and joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar.

Vijay had earlier said that the elections in the state will be a direct battle between the people and what he described as corruption and misgovernance.

“This election is a battle between the people of Tamil Nadu and the DMK. It is a battle between the people of Tamil Nadu and Stalin. This election is a battle between Vijay and Stalin,” he said on 23 February.

Seeman, Chief Coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi, who is contesting as the party’s candidate from the Karaikudi Assembly constituency, filed also filed his nomination papers on Monday. He filed his papers at the Devakottai election office.

The DMK will be fielding party candidates in 164 out of Tamil Nadu’s 234 Assembly constituencies. Another 11 candidates belonging to alliance partners will also be contesting under the party’s Rising Sun symbol.

Among DMK’s 164 candidates, 125 are graduates, and more than 60 new faces have been given an opportunity. The list includes 18 women candidates, 7 PhD holders, 15 doctors, 17 engineering graduates, and 29 law graduates.

The last date for filing nominations is 6 April. Votes will be taken up for counting on 4 May.
