A protest by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Monday, 11 September, 2023, in which there was police mismanagement, led to the transfer of an IPS officer.

Two IPS officers in Chennai were transferred and put on compulsory wait while another officer was transferred to Tirunelveli on Tuesday, 12 September.

The reasons appeared to range from a glitch in the security of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to mismanaging a BJP protest.

Mismanagement at Annamalai protest

According to sources, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai protested near Valluvar Kottam in Chennai on Monday against the HR & CE Minister PK Sekar Babu, condemning his participation in a conference to abolish Sanatana Dharma that was held in the city on 2 September.

During the protest, Annamalai and nearly a thousand of his supporters started to march towards the HR & CE Department headquarters to lay siege to it.

Unable to anticipate the move, the police posted on bandobust duty were made to gather to block Annamalai and other BJP cadres.

As the cops blocked Annamalai from moving forward, he sat on the road, which led to heavy traffic congestion during the peak evening hours in the locality, which connects several junctions.

Senior officers rushed to the spot and negotiated with Annamalai. The TN BJP president eventually ended his sit-in protest.

As a result of 30 minutes of ruckus created by Annamalai, traffic was severely affected in Chennai for nearly three hours.

Following the mismanagement in the handling of the situation, an order from the state’s Home Department transferred Chennai City (East) Joint Commissioner of Police Disha Mittal and posted her on compulsory wait.

CM’s security compromised?

IPS officer Deepa Sathyan, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) attached to the Pallikaranai range of the Tambaram Commissionerate, was transferred to the Chief Office of the HoPF without being allotted any post.

According to sources, the key reason for his transfer was a glitch in the chief minister’s security detail.

Stalin’s convoy was stuck in traffic during the chaos on the East Coast Road because of AR Rahman’s concert on Sunday.

“The chief minister’s convoy was stuck for nearly 10 minutes in the traffic, and was diverted to the opposite side (right) of the road as an emergency contingency,” a senior officer told South First.

“The issue was escalated to the office of the director general of police and an explanation was sought on the compromise made in the chief minister’s security,” the officer added.

In another transfer, IPS officer Adarsh Pachera was transferred from the post of superintendent of police (SP) of the Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Cell in Chennai and was posted as the SP/DCP of Tirunelveli City (East).
