The Tamil Nadu Police said on Tuesday, 12 July, that they have detained three school students — all minors — who raped a teen classmate in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.

The Class 10 student was allegedly blackmailed and raped by the trio near the Thitakudi village in the district.

The 14-year-old girl was a student at a government school in the village.

The police said one of the survivor’s schoolmates — a Class 12 student and resident of the Kodikalam village — invited her to a birthday party where they both clicked photos.

The accused then shared these photos with other students in the school.

Police officials from Thitakudi told South First that three of the survivor’s classmates blackmailed her over the photographs and demanded that she come to one of their houses.

The accused are said to have threatened to share the photos with the girl’s parents if she refused.

According to the police, when the girl visited one of their houses in the Avinangudi village on 1 July, the trio raped her and filmed the assault.

They then allegedly shared the video clip with another boy who was a former student of the same school.

“The girl was threatened over the assault and asked to keep mum about the trio,” police officers told South First.

The police told South First that the victim’s parents approached their daughter after seeing her depressed for a few days.

Only then did the girl tell them about the incident.

The Avinangudi district police registered a case against the offenders only on 7 July, when the parents filed a complaint.

After the three accused were detained, they were sent to a juvenile observation home.
