Synopsis: Monday, 9 June 2025: A wrap of news and developments in Tamil Nadu – Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam appointed ex-IRS officer K.G. Arunraj as Policy Head. A Tirunelveli court fined seven, including a DMK functionary, over Hindi signage vandalism. Police filed a case over a ritual with a human head, while the Madras High Court rebuked Chennai police for FIR delays
A major protest erupted in Dharapuram after a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) driver was allegedly assaulted by a senior official in Madurai.
Ganesan, a 50-year-old driver, was reportedly beaten by Assistant Divisional Engineer Marimuthu at the Arappalayam bus stand for allowing early passenger boarding, which the officer claimed hurt private bus operations.
Despite his injuries, Ganesan drove back to Dharapuram, where he collapsed and was admitted to hospital with multiple blunt injuries and a mild internal head injury.
Outrage intensified after a video showing the assault went viral. In response, Madurai Transport Regional Director suspended Marimuthu pending inquiry.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam President Vijay has appointed former IRS officer K.G. Arunraj as the party’s Propaganda and Policy General Secretary.
Arunraj will oversee strategic communication and policy formulation for the party, expected to play a key role as the outfit scales up its political activities.
A Tirunelveli court sentenced seven individuals, including DMK Engineers’ Wing Deputy Secretary Rajavarman, to one month of imprisonment or a ₹10,000 fine for vandalizing Hindi signage at the Nellai-Palayankottai railway station in protest against the three-language policy. All were released upon paying the fine.
Five individuals have been booked for allegedly performing a ritual dance with a human head during a temple festival at Uppur Oorkadu’s Sudalaimadasamy temple in Tirunelveli.
A case was registered based on a complaint by the Vellanguli VAO under four legal provisions. A similar incident had occurred at the same temple previously.
The Madras High Court has directed Chennai City Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore to submit a detailed report by July 8 on all pending FIRs, filed charge sheets, and ongoing investigations across city police stations.
The order came during a hearing on alleged police inaction in a caste-based discrimination case. Justice Velmurugan criticized systemic flaws, saying justice delays were unacceptable.
He also instructed that investigating officers not be deployed for law-and-order duties to prevent disruption of criminal investigations.
