A shocking incident has taken place at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, where a worker from Odisha who was undergoing treatment for a rabies infection died by suicide.

The deceased has been identified as Ram Chander (35), who had been working in Coimbatore. A few days ago, he was reportedly bitten by a stray dog. As his health deteriorated, he sought treatment at the government hospital on Tuesday.

Due to the severity of his condition, doctors admitted him to the isolation ward for rabies patients.

At around 2:30 PM, Ram Chander suddenly exhibited aggressive behaviour, shouting and wandering around the ward. In a drastic turn of events, he broke a notice board’s glass panel and fatally injured himself by slashing his throat.

Dr Nirmala, the hospital director, speaking of the incident said, “From the moment he arrived at the hospital, he exhibited aggressive behaviour, showing clear symptoms of rabies. He was uncontrollable, which is why we had to keep him in isolation. Suddenly, he broke a glass panel and started acting violently. Several attempts were made to sedate him, but due to the glass shards in his hand, doctors were unable to approach him. Despite the intervention of firefighters, we couldn’t save his life.”

She further stated that rabies symptoms cannot be confirmed through a blood test. A post-mortem examination of body tissues will be conducted within the next two days to ascertain the condition.
