Minister KN Nehru

Tamil Nadu’s Municipal Administration, Urban, and Water Supply Minister KN Nehru has stoked a controversy after he was seen in an undated video — which surfaced recently — claiming that a certain deputy superintendent of police (DSP) “could make a person a convict or remove them from the list of convicts”.

The minister was seen in the video speaking at an IAS academy function in Trichy, where DSP Paravasudevan of Trichy’s Jeeyapuram was also present.

In a tone of appreciation, Nehru is heard saying that the DSP could “do anything”.

In the video, the minister said, “This DSP used to escort me when he was a sub-inspector. He can do anything. He can convict anybody and remove anyone from the conviction list.”

Nehru was also heard saying in the video that he didn’t want to say anything beyond that as the DSP grew up with his party.

People are mistaken: DMK

DMK spokesperson Rajiv Gandhi — also a lawyer — told South First that Nehru’s comments did not put a question mark on the integrity of police officials and claimed the public had mistaken the real meaning behind what the minister said.

“I saw the video, and I’m sure the minister would not have meant this inappropriately. He said the DSP could convict wrongdoers and remove the innocent from the conviction list. The public has misconstrued the comment,” he claimed.

He refused to comment on it further.

Police department a DMK stooge?

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan told South First that the video of the minister was evidence that the police department had become a stooge of the ruling DMK.

“The minister was clear about what he said, and the public has not made a mistake in understanding it. Why does the DMK defend the very people who stoke controversy? Recently, PTR said something in an interview about the economy, and later someone of the DMK functionaries defended it. When will they be clear about their move and not deceive people”? Sathyan said.

DMK sources refused to comment on this.
