Just days after the alleged suicide of a Class 12 student of a private school in the Kallakurichi district rocked Tamil Nadu, another 17-year-old girl was found dead in a school hostel on Monday, 25 July, near Kilacheri in the Tiruvallur district.
The student, who hailed from the Tekkalur village near Tiruttani, allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room at the government-aided Sacred Hearts Girls’ High School. The reason behind her death is unclear.
A senior police official told South First that the student wore her school uniform and got ready to attend the classes on Monday morning. However, she allegedly went back to the dormitory.
Noting her absence in class, the staff at the school checked at the hostel, where they found her dead inside her room.
The investigation in the case has been transferred to the CB-CID following a recent Madras High Court order in the Kallakurichi student death case which said that any unnatural death taking place inside educational institutions must be probed by the CB-CID, and that the autopsy must be performed by three doctors.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased student and villagers staged stopped traffic on a nearby road alleging foul play in her death and demanded a thorough probe into the matter.
Senior police officials, including Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police M Sathya Priya and Thiruvallur Superintendent of Police (SP) P Cephas Kalyan, rushed to the spot and conducted a preliminary inquiry with the school management, teachers, and other students.
The police team also sent the student’s body for post-mortem to the government hospital in Tiruvallur.
The incident comes close on the heels of the massive violence that broke out on 17 July at the Shakti Matriculation School in the Kallakurichi district over the alleged suicide of a class 12 student.
Suspecting foul play in her death, a huge crowd gathered at the school premises to stage a protest demanding justice for the child, and the agitation turned violent.
