"For years to come, if the women of this state are getting this 'rights grant', it means that Stalin is still in power," said the chief minister. (X)

The DMK’s prime poll promise — Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam — was launched on Friday, 15 September, on the birth anniversary of former chief minister and DMK founder CN Annadurai at Kanchipuram by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

With this women’s right grant scheme, nearly 1.06 crore women heads of families in the state will be provided with ₹1,000 every month.

Kickstarting the scheme at Pachaiyappa’s College for Men in Kanchipuram, Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the scheme is a groundbreaking initiative that will reshape women’s welfare in India and will inspire many other states in the country.

‘Scheme is close to my heart’

“This scheme is so close to my heart. Our political opponents said that we gave a false poll promise. No. After coming to power, in the initial years, we could not deliver the promise only because of the financial instability of the state. In these two-and-a-half years, we stablised the financial condition of the state and we are now delivering our promise,” Stalin said.

“For years to come, if the women of this state are getting this ‘rights grant’, it means that Stalin is still in power,” the DMK leader said.

Further, Stalin continued, “I recently watched a news video of several women talking about this scheme. An old lady was saying that she would use this ₹1,000 for her medical expenses. Another woman was saying that she is having one time meal a day and if she gets this grant, she will start eating in the morning too. Though I am happy with these replies, I heard another woman saying that if she has this amount in her purse, she will walk with her head held high. This reply gave me immense joy and it is close to my heart. This is the aim of DMK.”

He added, “It is the chance given by the people (to be in power) and I am using the chance to serve to the people.” Stalin also recalled the societal condition that prevailed before the Dravidian movement where education was denied for women.

Reformation of Dravidian Movement

Taking a dig at those who support child marriages even today, Stalin said that the social reformation by the Dravidian movement made women study, work, earn, and marry at the right age.

“Just like that people term married women who are at home as ‘housewife’. They think that the women are ideal at home. They don’t even consider the work and sacrifice of these ladies at home. In order to recognise and honour their work at home, we brought out this scheme,” Stalin said.

Stalin further referred to his mother Dayalu Ammal, wife Durga Stalin, and daughter Senthamarai, and stated that these three women played a major part in his life.

Listing the welfare schemes that were implemented for women by the DMK government, Stalin said that the other states in the country are keenly watching these schemes and are implementing them in their states too. “Whenever I go for an INDIA bloc meeting and while meeting with chief ministers of other states, they are eager to know that how the DMK government is implementing the schemes and they wish to launch such schemes in their state too,” Stalin boasted.

The scheme was simultaneously launched by ministers in districts across the state. In the DMK manifesto for the 2021 Assembly elections, Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam featured as the prime poll promise.
