Synopsis: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on Monday after experiencing mild giddiness during his morning walk, and is expected to remain hospitalised for further observation and rest in the coming days. As a result, all public engagements, including a visit to his constituency Kolathur and a planned trip to Tiruppur for multiple official events, have been cancelled.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on Monday, 21 July, for evaluation and tests after experiencing “mild giddiness during his routine morning walking”, Dr Anil BG, Director of Medical Services at the hospital, said in a statement.

According to official sources, Stalin visited the hospital after attending a programme at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters in Chennai, where former AIADMK Organising Secretary A Anwhar Raajhaa joined the DMK.

Later in the day, the chief minister’s son and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin paid him a visit.

Apollo Hospitals said the chief minister will remain under observation for a few more days, as doctors have advised additional rest and further evaluation.

It added that he is expected to continue handling his official responsibilities from the hospital during this period, carrying on with his duties even while under medical monitoring.

Public engagements put on hold

Stalin had earlier attended a scheduled appointment with CPI (M) leader P Shanmugham at the DMK headquarters before his other planned programmes were put on hold.

His visit to Kolathur, his constituency in Chennai, was cancelled, and cabinet colleagues were deputed to represent him at the event there, an official from the Chief Minister’s Office said.

Information and Publicity Minister P Saminathan later confirmed that all of Stalin’s public engagements for the day had been called off following his hospital admission.

Among the cancelled programmes was an evening event to release a book authored by his wife, Durga Stalin.

A planned trip on Tuesday to Tiruppar, around 450 kilometres away, where Stalin was to inaugurate a hospital and a bus stand, hold a roadshow, and unveil a statue of his late father and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, has also been dropped.
